On the mat revelations

On the mat revelations can be like an acid flash back and are quite possibly the coolest thing about Jiu Jits.

Sometimes its about hitting the nerve whilst others it can be a mental fixation. Tonight I went through my I pod mood shuffle in my head as I was rolling trying to gauge the pace of the roll until I hit the tempo that worked.

It paid dividends and made me recap everything I picked up in America as I was rolling… that’s the flashback part. I ended up implementing about 10 or so techniques that have never been a major part of my game and to good effect.

So the penny drops and I figure I have put way to much pressure on myself to compete and not enjoyed my Jiu Jitsu as a result.

I will probably compete again. I’m just gonna wait for one of those shao-lin “it is time” moments before I do so.

  • Just found your blog and having a little nose about.

We are having students putting too much pressure on themselves to compete too. Some are doing competitions so much and putting so much pressure on themselves it’s actually limiting their growth and taking away from what they enjoy about grappling. Sometimes you gotta go back and think about what got you to where you are and kept your on the mats; which was probably enjoying rolling, getting better at doing your favourite moves and picking up surprising new details that evolve your game.

Btw, that’s by student Ranjeet in the picture, where was it taken?

  • Hazzard a gues i would say thats levo if its one of your students? I dont know you personally but we all used to train under phil wright.

Appreciate the comment all the same and i completely know what you mean about enjoying training again. Doing comps should be for the right reasons.
