Most people would have thought it was a good idea to be in Manchester this weekend to take part in ground control. They wouldnt be wrong, but then they also wouldnt be getting the chance to learn from one of the most seasoned brazilian black belts to grace these shores.
Thanks to Adam and a little expedition work last summer from myself and Doug (but mostly Adam) Factory BJJ hosted Wellington Megaton Dias for a two day seminar, his only stop in the U.K. on his tour of Europe.
Saturday saw the introduction with the man himself take on an entertaining role which delved into his origins in Jiu Jitsu all the way through to his competition mentality and approach. Megaton also took the time to share his wisdom and roll with people of all levels.
Day two and I was able to stay around longer after not having to leave for a wedding. I was however feeling it from the night before. This sunday also saw U.K. black belts Darren and Helen Currie attend the seminar which added to the awe factor as a room full of grapplers witnessed two black belt “super fights”. Then it was my go, a slightly more low key offering to behold but for me another chance to get taught a thing or two by a grappling master. Let me tell you the pressure is incredible. Megatons stature is decieving as he is smaller than I am, it goes to show the level of skill when I couldnt make a solid guard pass in 7 whole minutes.
For anyone who doesnt know much about Megaton you should check out his website, he competes on a regular basis including next weekend where he will be at the Scandinavian open. He lives and trains in Phoenix Arizona so be sure to check him out if you get the chance. I hope to go back next year . He is a humble guy who will make you work your ass off.
