Faixa Roxa

Faixa Roxa - heavy indeed.

Just a quick update from the weekend in between training, packing, a funeral and general panic before leaving the country for 6 months.

I was given my purple belt at the combat base group training day this Sunday by Helen Currie. I will have lots to say about both the day and this great honor which will probably have to wait until Wednesday when I have a nice wait at heathrow airport where I will have some ample bloging time.

In the meantime check out a few pictures from the day at the usual Factory Flickr. >>>>>>>>>>

The Bristol BJJ Premier Competition

Açaí, gi grips and a rugby match via a four hour slog to Bristol and here’s how it went down:

Myself and James headed to Bristol to represent Factory yesterday along with Big Phil (under Braulio) and our very own “Sensei” Paul for moral support. All week I have been ribbing Phil about his opponent, professional rugby player Matt Stevens (currently serving a ban for drug use) who has recently been making waves in the U.K. BJJ scene. Both myself and James competed in our respective adult brackets as well as ticking for the absolute with Phil squaring off in the Senior division.

We arrived as things were being set up where I had a chance to say hello to Mat of Grappling Dummy’s (formerly Martial Fart’s) complete with Scramble store packing all sorts of cool Japanese gear. More on that to come. I was first to fight in the Adlt Blue Feather weight category so I warmed up and donned my Gi heading strait for the weigh in.

My fight:

I weighed in at 67kg’s in the gi and was fourth to fight which gave me a chance to eye up the competition. Nerves were a slight problem, I think mainly because I haven’t fought since last year, but as soon as everything started that was ok. My opponent was a fighter called Curtis Dodge from Pedro Bessa. The fight started and he shot in for a double leg take down strait from the off which resulted in him slamming into my guard and scoring points on me. Not where I wanted to be so I attempted to get things back up to the feet which resulted in us standing and a ring out. Resetting now and again he went for the shoot only this time didn’t get it.

Somehow we went to the ground again, only against his open guard. I worked a pass and got to side control. I didn’t settle my position though and he was able to bridge me off resulting in another scramble. Dodge went for a huge sweep lifting me right over. With my cat like agility I was able to flip in the air and land on my feet the other side. The rest of the match was more of him in my guard and he got side control somewhere although I think that was earlier. I got an advantage for the pass but lost ultimately on his points to a take down and side control.

Everything felt good though, its not like I got a pasting. I felt like I had fought hard and not gassed out (thanks to Mat Leighs cardio sessions) against a physically stronger opponent.

Losing was disappointing but my opponent went on to beat everyone else by submission and take the gold, so me not getting submitted served as a small consolation. It also left me with plenty of time to eat Acai ice cream, roll with Mat Benyon and watch the rest of the fights including James in the purple division and Phil “The Rugby Ball” Clegg against rugby ace Matt Stevens.

Having already had a good start to the competition year James Nardone took to the mats proudly being sponsored for the first time by Gameness Europe. His division was small so the organizers had merged the weight divisions to light and heavy. James faced off to a smaller opponent in his first fight who played a very technical game. James put in a solid performance and won with a collar choke from the back and also racked up substantial points on his opponent.

James next fight he faced off to a senior purple belt who had a size advantage on him. James pulled guard first and controlled the opening moments. He was able to sweep his opponent with a sweep he has been working a lot at the gym and secure the opening points. James was looking to pass and began to get caught in a bad spot. His opponent had separated his arms and was looking to armbar. It was on tight and began to look like a sweep as well with James tapping mid air from what he described as “on so tight he heard a crack noise”. James managed to medal in third place as his opponent went on to take the gold in a well fought final. Not bad at all James. James has now medaled twice out of three competitions at purple belt.

Next up was Big Phil trying his hand for the first time with the blue belts. It couldn’t have been a tougher competition as his first fight was against non other than England Prop Matt Stevens. This was as much a highlight as any to watch and for me was more interesting than some of the black belt fights purely because of the sheer power of this professional athlete and the fact that my freind had drawn the short straw to fight him first. That being said Phil had as good a chance as anyone and in a gi its anyone’s game. Its certainly not rugby that’s for sure.

All I will say is the match went like this:

Phil fought off initial take down attempts by Stevens until Stevens eventually picked him up. Stevens slammed him down and the entire hall made an “Oooo” sound in response to a combined weight of over 40 stone hitting the floor hard.

Phil did well, kept his cool underneath and attempted to escape resulting in a restart from the feet but was eventually beaten by an arm lock from side-control. MASSIVE kudos to Phil for stepping up and for not cracking to my roo’s all week.

It was a long day that eventually saw us take on the absolute with similar results. In fairness we had wanted to go home earlier but as is the nature of these comps things ran over slightly. The highlight of the day after competing for me was hanging out with Mat again and this time we got to roll in the warm up area. He showed me his triangle techniques he picked up in Japan which I had until then been unable to figure out. His store did well too with what seemed like all of the Reversal Gear being sold (a good chunk of which to James and Paul).

I had a much more positive experience of competing this time around and came away know that I need to work hard. Settling in to controlling positions is going to be a big one for me over the coming months if I am to transfer my gym game into competition well. Big thanks also to Paul shooting a good chunk of the stills. Im looking forward to seeing the Vids from the day from Paul and James.

This is getting silly…

So I have been doing a little research and trying to find clubs and blogs in Australia to get an idea of the scene before I arrive. When sifting through this pan of information I have noticed something about home that is surely unique and that’s the amount of BJJ blogers their seem to be from Manchester…

Is this something in the water that makes us Mancuians want to rant about our discoveries when we wrestle with each other? Perhaps. Or maybe its just a coincidence.

Even so I think this phenomenon warrants the following equation:

BJJ Player + Gi x Rolling / 0161 = Blog!

Or maybe just like the latest of blogs I found of someone I have trained with suggests :

“People always try to be different. But no matter how hard they try to do something nobody else has tried to do before – soon they’ll realise, it’s been done by somebody else”

Wierd eh… anyway it deserves a new links section I think —->

Pre comp training and happenings

The competition approaches and its looking to be an enjoyable day once we get there. I’m really looking forward to watching Big Phil take on a proffesional England rugby player and who knows, I may even get him myself in the absolute.

Last nights session gave me a chance to work my guard retention as my plan B for when Im in a bad position. That and Adams coaching has moved us on to X guard which is good because I know one of my potential opponents plays it a lot. I got a really good roll in with Griff where we went pretty even and at a good intensity. Griff had most of the dominant position but I kept coming back to guard and had the majority of the sweeps.

In other news James has announced his official sponsor of Gameness Europe so I took a couple of pics for him in his new gear.

Gameness Fighter

I also took a snap of my pin board at factory BJJ, Just a random collection of photos from the years but for those of you who don’t live near by its just another example of the good vibes and obvious amout of time I have on my hands :D .

More time to wrestle crocodiles

Today I finished my notice at the Job I have been doing for 3 years with mentally ill kids. It was slightly emotional but now I’m officially free without a care in the world and headed as far from the place as I can possibly get.

The competition on Saturday is shaping up to be a good day followed by the annual combat base group training day before I depart for 6 months.

My only worry now is that B.A. are possibly about to strike. I will just have to start throwing some flying arm bars at the airport to get people back in the mood.

Training tomorrow should shape up to be good. I’m going to work my guard retention as a last ditch drill for the comp. Its the only thing I have been avoiding lately. Saying that I’m not pressuring any outcome for this competition. I have at least 2 fights so I’m going to have some fun.

The Adventure Starts Here

I’m already on that plane, work becomes more and more meaningless as I count down the days (16) with the promise of warm weather and a wealth of grappling clubs to explore. The list is ever growing with places to train in Australasia and I have been trying to calculate being in L.A. again for the mundials which I honestly don’t see happening but I can think of worse things.

One thing is for sure, it will be sad to leave Factory if only temporarily, as the club has gone from strength to strength in vibe and level. It will be great to get back though and see everyone’s improvements and hopefully share some wealth from training in a different culture.

I’m in for somewhat of a treat however as in the build up to my departure I’m going to compete and after that its the annual Combat Base Interclub which should see me get a good smashing so I will train harder down under.

Im ditching the idea of using my new black Gi to patch up as a record of places trained. Im going to use my old superfly as its more of a blank canvas.

When I train at each club I was thinking of having a little quota to meet before I get the patch and claim to have trained there. What would people say to a minimum of 5 sessions at any one gym to be worthy of a patch? That way I would hope to get some tuition and have rolled with a good number of people. Obviously I’m going to train more if I can, I just don’t want to train somewhere once for the sake of a patch.

The Master Plan!

My plan for this year, new Gi clad was to travel the world in the hope of a good times and culture.

Slightly off the beat its not going to be a full round the world trip but Im deffinately going around the world to Australia. The new Gi is going to be a great way to token this adventure by picking up some patches in exchange for some shed cotton and a few rips.

So starting in Sydney from March 10th will be a new chapter of travels and the blog.  I just hope that being on the other side of the globe will do wonders for my bottom game.

How this might look.

James MMA Debut – Mini Documentary

Its time to get back on the blog wagon. Once again my commitment to doing anything has slipped in recent weeks.

Never fear, I have some new tec and some new ideas for this year so stay tuned. The following is a basic film about James Nardone doing some MMA a while back. Something I have been meaning to make for a while. Enjoy.

Ho Ho Ho

Festive Rolls @Factorybjj

Ho Ho,

I haven’t been posting for over a month and my training has been sporadic at best which has been rubbish. Its a busy time of year though so I gues this is a contributing factor.

Thanks to popular request I will be reviewing my new Isami Gi (Pictured above) in the coming days. I have got some big plans for this Gi which will hopefully occupy most of next year. Its coming travelling with me.

Stay warm folks and have a lovely festive period.

On the mat revelations

On the mat revelations can be like an acid flash back and are quite possibly the coolest thing about Jiu Jits.

Sometimes its about hitting the nerve whilst others it can be a mental fixation. Tonight I went through my I pod mood shuffle in my head as I was rolling trying to gauge the pace of the roll until I hit the tempo that worked.

It paid dividends and made me recap everything I picked up in America as I was rolling… that’s the flashback part. I ended up implementing about 10 or so techniques that have never been a major part of my game and to good effect.

So the penny drops and I figure I have put way to much pressure on myself to compete and not enjoyed my Jiu Jitsu as a result.

I will probably compete again. I’m just gonna wait for one of those shao-lin “it is time” moments before I do so.
